The Union
Emily Vanek
The student union had a rough beginning; originally proposed during the great depression, the board of regents refused to take PWA money, or other funds from the New Deal, leaving no money for the construction of new buildings. However, thanks to the initiative of a student leader, Jack Fischer, they were eventually convinced to accept PWA funding, and construction began in September of 1937. Upon its opening in 1938, it became a hub of activity on an otherwise stale campus. Since its construction it has been renovated several times expanding northward each time. The South façade of the building has remained unchanged since its original construction in the late 1930s.
